Activity Report:
Introduction
The Department of Chemistry, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, organized a DBT educational and industrial tour for 38 students of B.Sc. Third Year (Major Chemistry) on 25 August 2026. The students visited Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization (MGIRI), Wardha, to gain practical exposure to research, applied science, rural technologies and industrial processes.
Visit to MGIRI, Wardha
During the visit, students visited six departments/units of MGIRI and gained practical knowledge about their activities.
1. Department of Chemical Engineering: Students were introduced to the application of chemical engineering principles in rural and small-scale industries. They learned about processing, material utilization and the development of suitable technologies for rural applications. The visit helped students connect their theoretical chemistry knowledge with industrial processes.
2. Department of Bioprocess and Bioenergy: Students learned about the utilization of biological processes for useful products and energy generation. They gained an understanding of the role of microorganisms and biomass in sustainable technologies. The visit highlighted the importance of biotechnology in developing environmentally friendly rural applications.
3. Department of Rural Crafts and Engineering: Students were introduced to the scientific and engineering improvement of traditional rural technologies and crafts. They observed how locally available resources can be converted into useful products using appropriate technologies. The visit emphasized sustainable and cost-effective approaches to rural development.
4. Department of Food Processing and Technology: Students gained an overview of scientific methods used for food processing, preservation and value addition. They learned about quality, hygiene and suitable processing techniques. The visit helped them understand the applications of chemistry in the food-processing sector.
5. Department of Polymer and Plastics Technology: Students were introduced to polymers, plastics and their applications in different fields. They learned how polymer chemistry is connected with material properties and industrial applications. The visit also created awareness about the appropriate and sustainable use of polymeric materials.
6. Department of Khadi and Village Industries / Rural Technology: Students observed technologies supporting village industries and rural employment. They learned how scientific methods can improve traditional production practices while utilizing local resources. The visit emphasized sustainable technologies, self-reliance and rural development.
Visit to Bapu Kuti, Sevagram
After the MGIRI visit, the students visited Bapu Kuti at Sevagram, which is closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi's life and philosophy. Students learned about Gandhian principles such as simple living, self-reliance, Swadeshi, cleanliness and service to society. The visit provided valuable historical and social learning beyond the academic curriculum.
Visit to Vinoba Bhave Ashram, Pavnar
The group then visited Vinoba Bhave Ashram at Pavnar. Students learned about Acharya Vinoba Bhave, his philosophy of non-violence, social service and the Bhoodan movement. The peaceful environment of the Ashram encouraged students to understand values such as simplicity, equality, self-discipline and community service. The visit connected scientific education with social responsibility and ethical values.

Overall, the tour enhanced students' scientific knowledge, practical awareness, career orientation and social values.
