Objectives:
- 1. To create public awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer.
- 2. To engage students and community members in a collective movement for environmental protection.
- 3. To motivate participants to adopt sustainable habits such as reducing fossil fuel use, avoiding harmful chemicals, and promoting renewable energy.
- 4. To reduce plastic bag usage and promote eco-friendly alternatives.
- 5. To spread awareness about the impacts of plastic waste on ozone depletion and climate change.

Activity Report:
World Ozone Day is celebrated on 16th September every year to spread awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and to encourage actions to protect it from depletion. The day marks the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol (1987), a global agreement to phase out ozone-depleting substances. In this context, the Department of Environmental Science in collaboration with NCC and NSS units of Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati organized various activities like a Walkathon, oath ceremony, and cloth bag distribution programme.
The programme commenced with briefing the participants about the purpose and objectives of organizing the event by Dr. S. P. Ingole,Head,Department of Environmental Science & IQAC Coordinator of the College. This was followed by an inspiring address by Hon. Principal of the college who motivated the students and highlighted that the ozone layer serves as a protective shield against harmful ultraviolet rays and its preservation is a collective responsibility of all citizens.Thereafter, the rally was formally inaugurated with flagged off by the Hon.Principal.
Around 300students&faculty members actively participated in the rally. Holding banners and posters with the slogan “Ozone Protection – Earth Protection”, the participants spread a strong message of environmental conservation across the surrounding areas. The rally started from the college campus and moved through Panchavati Square and Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Smriti Bhavan route before returning to the college.
At Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Smriti Bhavan campus, all student participants took an oath to protect the ozone layer and environment. In college premises all staff members took an oath.Hon. Principal Dr. G. V. Korpe addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for continuous efforts in reducing pollution and saving the atmosphere for future generations.
Dr. Sangeeta Ingole, expressed gratitude to all participants. To support the cause of reducing plastic usage, cloth bags made from old sarees were distributed to faculty members& non-teaching staff.
Faculty members &Non-teaching staff of the college &department including Dr. K. J. Gawai, Mr. V. D. Bute, Dr. M. M. Bhonde, Dr. S. S. Arsad, Dr. P. D. Deshmukh, Dr. N. H. Bansod, Dr. M. A. Jane, Dr. V. D. Deshmukh, A. S. Malwe and student volunteers worked tirelessly for the successful conduct of the event.
The programme concluded with an important resolution: Every 16th of every month will be observed as a “Vehicle-Free Day” on campus to promote sustainable efforts towards ozone protection.
Outcomes:
- 1. Increased awareness among participants and the local community regarding ozone depletion issues.
- 2. Enhanced visibility of World Ozone Day through banners, slogans, and public interaction.
- 3. Strengthened environmental commitment among participants through a collective pledge.
- 4. Improved understanding of individual roles in protecting the ozone layer.
- 5. Increased adoption of cloth bags as a sustainable alternative.
