Activity Report:

The Department of Environmental Science, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, organized a comprehensive School and College Level E-Waste Collection and Management Campaign under the theme “Sustainable Tomorrow: E-Waste Collection & Awareness Campaign.” This initiative was conducted on the auspicious occasion of the 128th birth anniversary of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh, the esteemed founder of Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste), promote environmentally sound management practices, and encourage students and the community to adopt sustainable lifestyles.
In recent years, e-waste has emerged as one of the most serious environmental challenges across the globe. Rapid technological advancements, increasing consumer demand for electronic devices, and the fast replacement rate of gadgets have resulted in a significant rise in electronic waste. E-waste includes discarded electronic items such as mobile phones, computers, televisions, printers, batteries, chargers, and other electronic accessories. These items contain hazardous substances like lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, and flame retardants, which pose serious risks to human health and the environment if not handled properly. Improper disposal practices such as open dumping, burning, or informal recycling can lead to soil contamination, air pollution, and water pollution.
Considering the severity of the issue, the Department of Environmental Science undertook this campaign as a best practice initiative to address the problem at the grassroots level. The campaign was designed not only to collect e-waste but also to educate students, teachers, and the general public about the importance of responsible consumption, proper disposal, and recycling of electronic waste.
The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from various schools and colleges affiliated with Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati. The participating institutions included Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati; Mahatma Phule Mahavidyalaya, Warud; R.R. Lahoti Science College, Morshi; Matoshri Vimlabai Deshmukh College, Amravati; Shri Shivaji High School, Chikhaldara; Shri Shivaji Horticulture College, Amravati; Shri Shivaji Agriculture Biotechnology College, Amravati; and Dr. Panjabrao Alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh Memorial Medical College, Amravati. The involvement of multiple institutions ensured a wider outreach and increased the impact of the campaign.
The campaign was carefully planned and executed in multiple phases. Initially, awareness programs were conducted across participating institutions. Faculty members and students of the Department of Environmental Science organized lectures, seminars, and interactive sessions to educate participants about the hazards of e-waste and the benefits of proper recycling. Posters, banners, and digital media were used effectively to spread awareness. Students were encouraged to actively participate by bringing unused or discarded electronic items from their homes, neighborhoods, and institutions.
Special emphasis was given to the concept of the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Participants were informed about how reducing unnecessary consumption of electronic devices, reusing functional items, and recycling non-functional items can significantly minimize environmental impact. The campaign also highlighted the importance of avoiding informal recycling practices, which often involve unsafe methods and expose workers to toxic substances.
A well-organized system for the collection and management of e-waste was established. Each participating institution was provided with clear guidelines regarding the segregation and safe storage of e-waste. Collection points were set up within campuses to facilitate easy participation. The collected materials included a wide range of electronic items such as old mobile phones, chargers, batteries, computer peripherals, cables, circuit boards, and small electronic appliances.
After collection, the e-waste from all participating institutions was transported to a central collection point at Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati. At this stage, the waste was further sorted, categorized, and documented. Proper records were maintained to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process.
The campaign achieved remarkable success, with approximately one tonne of e-waste collected. This significant quantity reflects the active involvement and environmental awareness of students, teachers, and staff members. It also highlights the effectiveness of collective efforts in addressing environmental challenges.
A key highlight of the campaign was the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Environmental Science and Suritex Private Limited, Nagpur an authorized E-Waste Management Company. This collaboration ensured that all collected e-waste was handled in an environmentally safe and legally compliant manner. After the collection and documentation process, the entire e-waste was handed over to Suritex Private Limited for proper transportation, dismantling, recycling, and disposal.
Suritex Private Limited follows scientific and eco-friendly methods for e-waste management. The company ensures that hazardous materials are safely treated and disposed of, while valuable components such as metals and plastics are recovered and reused. This not only prevents environmental pollution but also conserves natural resources by reducing the need for raw material extraction. The partnership with Suritex reflects the commitment of the Department towards adopting sustainable and responsible waste management practices.
The campaign strictly adhered to government rules and regulations related to e-waste management. As part of compliance, Form No. 6 was duly maintained, documenting the quantity and type of e-waste collected and processed. Certificates were provided to participating institutions as recognition of their valuable contribution to the campaign. This formal documentation added credibility to the initiative and ensured that all procedures were carried out transparently.
In addition to environmental benefits, the campaign also had a financial aspect. The e-waste collected was evaluated, and the revenue generated from its recycling was transferred directly to the bank accounts of the respective colleges through RTGS. This transparent financial transaction encouraged institutions to actively participate and demonstrated the economic value of proper waste management.
The campaign provided a valuable learning experience for students. It offered practical exposure to real-world environmental issues and management techniques. Students gained insights into waste segregation, recycling processes, environmental regulations, and sustainability concepts. Their active involvement in organizing and implementing the campaign helped develop leadership qualities, teamwork, communication skills, and a sense of social responsibility.
Furthermore, the campaign contributed to the broader goals of environmental conservation and sustainable development. It aligned with national initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and supported the principles of responsible waste management. By engaging students at the school and college level, the campaign helped in building a strong foundation for future environmental stewardship.
The success of this campaign demonstrates the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, environmental agencies, and authorized recycling companies. It highlights how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change and create a positive impact on society. The campaign also set an example for other institutions to adopt similar practices and contribute to environmental protection.
In conclusion, the School and College Level E-Waste Collection and Management Campaign was a highly successful and impactful initiative. The active participation of multiple institutions, the collection of a substantial amount of e-waste, and its proper management through an authorized agency underline the effectiveness of the campaign. The collaboration with Suritex Private Limited ensured that the e-waste was handled responsibly and sustainably. Conducted as a best practice by the Department of Environmental Science, this initiative has set a benchmark for future environmental activities. It is expected that such efforts will continue to inspire students, institutions, and society to work towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
