Activity Report:

Environmental awareness has become one of the most important educational priorities in today’s world. Rapid urbanization, increasing pollution, deforestation, climate change, and improper waste disposal have created serious challenges for society. These issues can be addressed effectively only when environmental values are developed from an early age. Schools play a vital role in shaping children’s attitudes, habits, and sense of responsibility toward nature. In this context, outreach activities conducted by higher education institutions help bridge academic learning with community service.
With this objective, the B.Sc. III students of the Department of Environmental Science, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati organized an outreach activity at Suyog Primary School, Dastur Nagar, Amravati on 29 September 2025. The program aimed to create awareness among primary school students regarding environmental conservation through interactive, educational, and creative activities. The event was carefully planned to ensure active participation, enjoyment, and practical learning for the students.
The outreach activity reflected the importance of experiential learning, where students learn by participating rather than only listening to lectures. The program included an environmental quiz competition, a thumbprint tree creative activity, prize distribution, awareness messages, and promotion of eco-friendly habits through distribution of cloth bags. The event was supported by the school authorities, teachers, and principals, whose cooperation contributed significantly to the success of the program.
Organizers and Participants
The program was conducted by four B.Sc. III students from the Department of Environmental Science, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati. These student facilitators took responsibility for planning, organizing, and conducting all activities smoothly.
Approximately 38 students from different classes of Suyog Primary School actively participated in the event. Both boys and girls were included, ensuring equal participation opportunities. The school teachers remained present throughout the session and guided students whenever necessary.
The program was also graced by the presence of Principal Mr. Thakare, Mr. Gaikwad, and the Vice/Wise Principal, whose encouragement created a positive and respectful atmosphere.
Preparation and Materials Used
Before the event, the organizing students prepared various materials to make the session engaging and meaningful. These included:
• Quiz sheets containing environmental questions
• Drawing sheet with a tree outline for the thumbprint activity
• Colored paints for making leaves with thumb impressions
• Crayon box for first prize winner
• Chocolates for second and third prizes
• Special prize for the most active participant
• Chocolates for all participants
• Eco-friendly cloth bags for teachers
• Tokens of appreciation for school authorities
The materials were selected to combine learning, creativity, and motivation.
Methodology of the Program
The methodology of the outreach activity was based on participatory learning. Instead of using only lecture-based teaching, the students were involved in games, questions, and creative tasks. This method is more effective because children understand concepts better when they actively participate.
The program followed a structured sequence:
1. Welcome and introduction
2. Environmental awareness talk
3. Quiz competition
4. Thumbprint tree activity
5. Prize distribution
6. Distribution of cloth bags and tokens
7. Closing remarks
This balanced flow ensured that students remained interested and energetic throughout the session.
Conduct of the Outreach Activity
1. Welcome Session
The program began with a warm welcome by the B.Sc. III student facilitators. The school students were greeted enthusiastically and introduced to the purpose of the visit. A short talk was given about the importance of keeping the environment clean, planting trees, saving water, avoiding plastic, and protecting nature.
The facilitators encouraged students to share simple ideas such as switching off lights when not needed, using dustbins, and planting trees at home. This created an interactive atmosphere from the start.
2. Environmental Quiz Competition
The first major activity was an environmental quiz competition. Questions were asked on topics such as:
• Importance of trees
• Water conservation
• Recycling waste
• Saving electricity
• Plastic pollution
• Animals and biodiversity
Students participated with great enthusiasm. Many children eagerly raised their hands to answer questions. Some students discussed answers among themselves, showing teamwork and interest in learning.
The quiz helped assess students’ prior knowledge and introduced new ideas in an enjoyable manner.
3. Prize Distribution
To encourage participation, prizes were distributed as follows:
• First Prize – Crayon Box
• Second Prize – Chocolates
• Third Prize – Chocolates
• Special Prize – Most Active Participant
All other students were also given chocolates so that every child felt included and appreciated. This created happiness among students and promoted healthy competition.
4. Thumbprint Tree Activity
The second major activity was the thumbprint tree creative session. A large tree trunk and branches were drawn on a sheet. Students were invited one by one to dip their thumbs in colored paint and place thumbprints as leaves on the tree.
Children were excited to choose different colors and proudly contributed their marks. The activity symbolized that every individual can contribute to protecting nature. Just as each thumbprint formed part of the tree, every person’s actions help the environment.
The final artwork looked colorful and beautiful, reflecting unity, teamwork, and creativity.
5. Distribution of Cloth Bags and Tokens
As part of sustainability promotion, eco-friendly cloth bags were distributed to teachers. This encouraged the replacement of plastic bags with reusable alternatives.
Tokens of appreciation were also presented to the Principal and Vice Principal in gratitude for their support and guidance. This promoted values of respect, discipline, and gratitude among students.
Student Response and Participation
The response of students was highly positive. Throughout the session, they remained attentive, cheerful, and actively involved.
During the quiz, students displayed awareness regarding environmental topics and curiosity to know more. Their eagerness to answer questions showed that children are naturally interested in environmental learning when presented attractively.
The thumbprint tree activity was especially popular. Students enjoyed using colors, helping friends, and seeing the tree become complete. Many children smiled proudly after making their thumbprints.
Prize distribution generated excitement and motivation. Students clapped for winners and appreciated the inclusive distribution of chocolates.
Teachers observed that students were disciplined, cooperative, and enthusiastic during the entire program.
The outreach activity conducted by B.Sc. III students of the Department of Environmental Science, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati at Suyog Primary School, Dastur Nagar, Amravati on 29/09/2025 was highly successful and meaningful. The session effectively combined education, creativity, participation, and motivation.
Through the environmental quiz, students learned important concepts in a fun manner. Through the thumbprint tree activity, they expressed creativity while understanding collective responsibility toward nature. Prize distribution encouraged confidence and enthusiasm, while cloth bag distribution promoted sustainable practices.
The active support of the school principals, teachers, and college facilitators ensured smooth execution of the program. Most importantly, the event created awareness among young students and inspired them to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives.
Such outreach programs are essential in building an environmentally conscious society. They help children understand that protecting nature is everyone’s responsibility. The program served as an excellent example of how educational institutions can work together for environmental awareness and community development.
