Activity Report:
“Two Days workshop on Environmental and Green Audit” for teaching staff of colleges under Shri Shivaji Education Society and colleges of Amravati city dated 10th & 11th August 2024 was organized by dept. of Environmental Science under DBT STAR College scheme. The aim is to organize this workshop is to provide basic knowledge and awareness about the Green, Environment (Air, Water, Soil, Noise) and Energy audit required for NAAC assessment process and also for the sustainability of environment.
The inaugural program was scheduled at 11.30 am, The chairperson in this program was Hon. Dr. G. V. Korpe Principal, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, Chief guest and inaugural for this was Dr. Sharda Kosankar, Principal Scientist, NEERI as a chief guest, Dr. Nitisha Patankar, Director, ENVINZOA, Nagpur as a guest of honor, the workshop convener was Dr. S. P. Ingole, IQAC Coordinator and Head Dept. of Environmental Science, Dr. D. D. Khedkar, Programme Coordinator DBT Star Programme and Head Dept. of Botany and Mr. V. D. Bute workshop coordination graced the dais. Total 103 participant from different senior colleges of Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati along with other colleges under SGBAU where register for the workshop out of 89 participant actually attended the workshop. Conducting an Environmental, Energy, and Green Audit for an educational institute is a valuable step towards ensuring sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship. Here’s an outline for preparing such an audit, covering the core areas to be evaluated, methodology, and reporting.
Workshop Proceedings:
The workshop commenced with an inaugural address, followed by first technical session was conducted by Dr. Sharda Kosankar, Principal Scientist, NEERI on topic Green Audit for Educational Institution. In this session Dr. Kosankar mam highlight the carbon footprint and carbon sequestration technique and formula for calculation. Second technical session was conducted by Dr. Nitisha Patankar madam Director, ENVINZOA, Nagpur Environmental Audit for Educational Institution. Madam provided information about the process and guide about the environmental audit of educational institute. Different formats and heads required for the collection of audit dada implementation of methodology, stages of audit regarding information is provided by a madam in second session. Third session of workshop taken by Mr. Om Bapat Director, Ground Zero Energy Solutions, Amravati on Energy Audit for Educational Institution. Sir focused on the energy audit of institute. On second day of workshop online technical session was conducted by Mr. Dinesh Vaidya, HSE Consultant, Pune on Health Safety and Environmental Auditing Techniques. He gave information about conduction of environment audit at college level. He provided various methods and format for execution of audit at ground level.
The Hon. principal Dr. G. V. Korpe sir express his view regarding workshop. He believes that the two-day workshop on Environment and Green Audit under DBT Star Scheme will create a positive attitude towards improving the quality of the environment in the college and will certainly beneficial for better preparation of Environment and Green Audit.
Day 1: Workshop Activities
Technical Session 1: Overview of Green Audits
Presenter: Dr. Sharda Kosankar, Principal Scientist, NEERI
Key Points Covered:
• Difference between Environmental and Green Audits.
• Role of Green Audits in resource conservation and environmental sustainability.
he green audit will assess the institute’s sustainability practices, resource conservation efforts, and promotion of environmental awareness.
• Green Spaces:
o Availability and maintenance of green spaces (gardens, trees, lawns).
o Biodiversity on campus, including native plants and wildlife.
o Participation in afforestation or tree plantation drives.
• Sustainability Initiatives:
o Adoption of eco-friendly products and reduction of single-use plastics.
o Green transportation initiatives (bicycle racks, electric vehicle charging stations).
o Use of sustainable materials in construction and renovation projects.
• Eco-friendly Practices:
o Paperless communication and the use of digital resources.
o Participation in environmental awareness campaigns (Earth Day, eco-clubs).
o Presence of green policies, such as carbon footprint reduction targets.
Technical Session 2: Overview of Environmental Audits

o Regulatory standards and legal frameworks (ISO 14001, local regulations).
The environmental audit will focus on the following aspects:
• Waste Management:
o Segregation of waste into recyclable, non-recyclable, and hazardous categories.
o Waste disposal methods, including e-waste and biomedical waste.
o Availability of recycling bins and composting facilities.
• Water Management:
o Water consumption patterns across the campus.
o Presence of water-saving devices (e.g., low-flow faucets, dual-flush toilets).
o Rainwater harvesting systems, groundwater recharge, and water recycling initiatives.
• Air Quality:
o Indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring.
o Presence of pollution control measures (e.g., exhaust ventilation, air purifiers).
o Impact of nearby traffic or industries on air quality.
• Pollution Control:
o Control measures for air, water, and noise pollution.
o Effluent treatment plants and their effectiveness.
o Compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
Technical Session 3: Overview of Energy Audits

o Definition and types of energy audits (compliance, management, functional).
o Regulatory standards and legal frameworks for energy audit.
The energy audit will focus on identifying energy-saving opportunities and improving efficiency.
• Electricity Consumption:

o Review of the electricity supply system and equipment (transformers, switchgear).
• Lighting:
o Assessment of the types of lighting used (LED, CFL, incandescent).
o Review of daylighting strategies to reduce artificial lighting needs.

• HVAC Systems (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning):
o Efficiency of heating and cooling systems.
o Regular maintenance and use of energy-efficient systems (inverters, energy ratings).
o Natural ventilation practices.
• Renewable Energy:
o Installation of solar panels or wind energy systems.
o Feasibility of expanding renewable energy options.
o Use of energy from renewable sources and integration into the campus energy grid.
Day 2: Workshop Activities
• Technical Session 4: Health Safety and Environmental Auditing Techniques and Writing Environmental and Green Audit Reports

Key Points Covered:
• Report structure (introduction, findings, recommendations).
• Data presentation techniques (tables, charts, graphs).
• Making reports actionable and accessible to stakeholders.
The audit will be conducted through a combination of the following methods:
• Data Collection: Gathering data on energy usage, water consumption, waste generation, and other environmental indicators.
• Site Inspection: Physical examination of the campus to assess facilities, equipment, and green spaces.
• Interviews and Surveys: Engaging with key stakeholders such as facility managers, staff, and students to understand current practices and gather suggestions.
• Documentation Review: Reviewing existing policies, maintenance logs, and compliance records.
