Guest lecture for farmers, teachers and students (2024-25) was organized by Department of Chemistry on the topic of “Awareness campaign in Rural Areas about water crises and value of water” on Monday 25th November 2024 under the guidance of Dr. G.V. Korpe, Principal, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, Dr. P.R. Mandlik, Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr. D.D. Khedkar ,Coordinator , DBT Star Project. Dr. S. A. Wadhal. And Dr. N.A. Kalambe, organizing Committee members. Mr. Milind Malve and Mr. Sudhakar Pawar worked hard for the success of this program.
The faculty members, farmers and students were present for this programme. Mrs. Indutai B.Javanjal , Head of the Panchyat , was the president of this program . Total 61participants were present for this guest lecture.The topic of this guest lecture was“Awareness campaign in Rural Areas about water crises and value of water”.
Dr. Shrikant R. Warhekar, Asst. Professor, Department of Environment Science, Smt. Narsamma Arts, Commerce and Science college, Kiran Nagar Amravati was the speaker for this programe.
He had guided to farmers, students and teachers about the Causes of Water Crisis in Indian Villages
1. Groundwater Depletion: Over-extraction of groundwater for irrigation, drinking, and industrial purposes has led to declining water tables.
2. Inadequate Rainwater Harvesting: Insufficient rainwater harvesting and storage infrastructure results in significant water loss.
3. Pollution and Contamination: Industrial, agricultural and domestic waste pollutes water sources, making them unfit for consumption.
4. Inefficient Water Use: Lack of water-saving practices and inefficient irrigation systems exacerbate water scarcity.
*Value of Water in Indian Villages*
1. Cultural Significance: Water is revered in Indian culture, with many villages having traditional water harvesting systems and festivals celebrating water.
2. Livelihood Support: Water is essential for agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, supporting the livelihoods of many villagers.
3. Health and Hygiene: Access to clean water is crucial for maintaining health, hygiene, and sanitation in villages.
4. Economic Empowerment: Water availability can empower women, who often bear the responsibility of collecting water, by reducing their workload and enabling them to engage in other activities.
*Initiatives to Address Water Crisis in Indian Villages*
1. Rainwater Harvesting Systems: Implementing rainwater harvesting systems to collect and store rainwater for non-potable uses.
2. Water Conservation Practices: Promoting water-saving practices, such as drip irrigation and mulching, to reduce water waste.
3. Water Treatment and Purification: Implementing water treatment and purification systems to remove contaminants and make water safe for consumption.
4. Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) : Implementing CLTS programs to improve sanitation and hygiene practices, reducing water pollution.
5. Water Literacy and Awareness : Educating villagers about the importance of water conservation, efficient use, and protection of water sources.
Dr. Shrikant R. Warhekar also focused on following Government and non government Initiatives in water conservation
*Governmental Initiatives*
1. Jal Jeevan Mission : Aims to provide functional household tap connections to all rural households by 2024.
2. National Rural Drinking Water Programme : Focuses on providing safe and adequate drinking water to rural areas.
3. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana : Aims to enhance water efficiency and productivity in agriculture.
*Non-Governmental Initiatives*
1. Works with local partners to provide access to safe water and sanitation in rural India.
2. The Water Foundation : Focuses on promoting water conservation, efficient use, and protection of water sources.
3. Arghyam: Works on water and sanitation issues, with a focus on community-led initiatives.
