Activity Report:
Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati has long tradition of knowledge at both laboratory as well as field with respect to practical aspect. Keeping in mind the importance of practical knowledge, hands on training sessions by inviting different invited speakers and expert are continually organized by different departments of the college to acquaint and enhance the on practical knowledge and experience of the students. Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati has always initiated and carried out outreach and extension activities especially focused on practical approach. In continuation to this mindset, department of zoology has organized and conducted a Guest lecture and hands on training sessions on “Molecular Biology and its applications” catalyzed by DBT Star Project Scheme 2024 and as per university curriculum. This workshop was designed according to undergraduate students of B. Sc. III Year to make students understand basis of molecular biology, structure, function and interaction between molecules like proteins, nucleic acids etc. through guest lecture and handling and using equipments like PCR, Electrophoresis etc. to students and to create interest in the field and potential career opportunities in molecular biology. This workshop was scheduled on 1st and 7th March 2025 at the Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati.
Followings are the designed Aims, Objectives and outcomes of the this two days Guest lecture and hands on training workshop on “Molecular Biology and its applications”
Aims and Objectives:
1. Basic understanding of the molecular basis of life.
2. To know about the structure, function, interaction and regulation of molecules like DNA, RNA and Proteins.
3. To demonstrate the process of DNA isolation, Electrophoresis and PCR.
4. To engage students in hands on training sessions.
5. To create student’s interest in related research and careers.
Outcomes:
1. Students acquired deeper knowledge of fundamental concepts of molecular biology.
2. Students gained the understanding about the structure, function and interactions of biomolecules like DNA, RNA and Proteins.
3. Students grasped the practical knowledge of the molecular techniques.
4. Students got information about basic practical knowledge about different molecular biology techniques.
5. Students potentially develop interest in related research and careers.
The program started sharply at 1.00pm on 1st March 2025 (Saturday) at department of Zoology by welcoming the guest speaker Mr. Roshan R. Godse, Director, Gowin Electronics, Amravati in the presence of Dr. J. D. Dhote, Professor and Head, Department of Zoology, Dr. G. A. Wagh, Professor and Department DBT Project coordinator, Dr. A. R. Rajoria, Assistant Professor and Activity incharge, Dr. G. D. Hande, Dr. S. V. Gawande, Dr. P. M. Ramteke and Dr. S. J. Kawade; student participants, whole non-teaching staff of zoology department, by offering him flowers. After the welcome of the invited guest, Dr. G. A. Wagh, Prof. & Department DBT Star Project Coordinator, gave an introduction about this activity and highlighted the importance of the hands on training programme in creating as well as spreading knowledge about molecular basis of life and basic introduction about molecular biology and its applications. Mr. Roshan Godse, invited speaker, also gave an overall idea about the molecular techniques like DNA isolation, Electrophoresis and PCR that will be included in the hands on training session in inaugural ceremony of the workshop. A total of 64 students of B. Sc. III year were registered for the workshop.
After inaugural ceremony, Mr. Roshan R. Godse started with his guest lecture on DNA isolation and Electrophoresis. Mr. Godse explained the process of DNA isolation as well as Electrophoresis step by step to the students in a very simple way with the help of Power Point Presentation. After the guest lecture, Mr. Godse answered the queries of the students. For demonstration, students were divided in groups and the session was conducted in CIC lab. as well as in department laboratory. First day of this hands on training workshop on “Molecular biology & it’s application” was concluded at 5.30pm with refreshments for the participants. Students were very much excited regarding the practical work and handling of the equipments of molecular biology and were eagerly waiting for the next schedule on 7th march 2025.
Second day of hands on training workshop on “Molecular biology & it’s applications” started with guest lecture on PCR by Mr. Roshan Godse. Mr. Godse explained in detailed regarding parts of PCR machine, the steps during PCR, precautions to be taken while using PCR machine. Students were seen curious and they asked questions to Mr. Godse. After the discussion, Mr. Godse proceeded with the demonstration using PCR machine and run the gel in gel electrophoresis for DNA bands. Students participated in the demonstration session and loaded the sample for electrophoresis after the demonstration given by the expert.
Study materials of these techniques in the form of booklets were distributed among students as souvenir of the workshop. At the end of the second day, students gave their feedback regarding workshop, organising committee thanked the expert for sparing time and sharing the information of different techniques of molecular biology and its application to the students and meticulously carrying out demonstration of PCR, Electrophoresis and DNA isolation.
Students enjoyed and grasped the information provided in this workshop. While concluding, this two days Guest lecture and Hands on training program sessions on “Molecular Biology and Its Applications” was a very successful event conducted by Department of Zoology under DBT Star Project Scheme 2024 and as per the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University Curriculum. This workshop was coordinated and conducted under the guidance of Dr. J. D. Dhote, Prof. & Head, Department of Zoology and Dr. G. A. Wagh, Prof. & Departmental DBT Coordinator in the presence of Dr. J. D. Dhote, Prof. & Head, Department of Zoology; Dr. G. A. Wagh, Prof. & Departmental DBT Scheme Project Coordinator, Dr. S. V. Gawande, Asstt. Prof.; Dr. A. R. Rajoria, Asstt. Prof. & Activity Incharge; Dr. G. D. Hande, Asstt. Prof.; Dr. P. M. Ramteke, Asstt. Prof. and Dr. S. J. Kawade, Asstt. Prof. Workshop on molecular biology and its applications was concluded with a group photo.
