Activity Report
Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College Amravati organized a one day Workshop on Clinical Laboratory Techniques at Janata Highschool Anjangaon Bari, Dist. Amravati in collaboration with Primary Health Centre, Anjangaon Bari under DBT Star Project scheme on 30 August 2024.
The workshop on clinical laboratory techniques aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of students in modern laboratory practices and diagnostics. The focus was on understanding laboratory procedures, proper sample collection and interpreting the test results.
Blood tests can reveal a wealth of information about health conditions, such as infections, anaemia, other blood related disorders and immune deficiencies. Clinical Care is anything relating to the direct medical treatment or testing of patients. Access to affordable, quality health care can prevent disease and lead to earlier disease detection. So, with this aim Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati conducted this workshop in Janata High school, Anjangaon Bari in collaboration with Health Centre, Anjangaon bari.
In this workshop total 20 students participated from BSc III (MEB) group. Initially these students were guided by the expert doctors, zoology teachers and technical staff of the Primary Health centre, Anjangaon bari on how to perform clinical laboratory tests and also given the hands on training of clinical laboratory techniques like blood group identification, determination of Haemoglobin %, determination of blood sugar level and measurement of Blood pressure .These 20 trained students of our Zoology Department played an important role as volunteers in this workshop and administered the clinical laboratory tests to 184 students of Janata High school, Anjangaon Bari under the guidance of expert doctors, zoology teachers and technical staff of the Primary Health centre, Anjangaon bari.
A total 184 students of Janata High school, Anjangaon Bari participated in this workshop and took their clinical tests such as blood group identification, determination of Haemoglobin %, determination of blood sugar level and measurement of Blood pressure. Out of 184 students, 114 students of standard 8 th participated in blood group test while 70 girls students of standard 12 th participated in haemoglobin percent determination test, sugar determination test and measurement of blood pressure. Overall analysis after the school students were tested, it was found that their blood sugar level was low and haemoglobin percentage was also low.
I) Identification of Blood groups- Class V th students
Blood Groups ‘A’ +ve ‘A’ -ve ‘B’ +ve ‘B’ -ve ‘AB’ +ve ‘AB’ -ve ‘O’ +ve ‘O’ -ve Total

Female 20 28 13 07 02 - - - 70

III) Determination of Haemoglobin Percentage( Hb %) : Class XII th students (Girls)
HB % gm/100ml Below

Female 01 17 33 13 06 - - - 70

IV) Measurement of Blood Pressure: Class XII th students (Girls)

(Below range)
Normal range Hyper Tension
(Higher range) Total
Female 22 46 04 70

The workshop on clinical laboratory techniques successfully provided a comprehensive learning experience, practical skills and safety measures to the participants. From this workshop students learned about pricking process, procedure of blood group identification, agglutination or clumping phenomenon, role of antisera/ monoclonal antibodies, principle of the test and they learned how to identify Rh positive as well as Rh negative blood groups. Blood group testing is a small simple test but has a substantial impact on health safety and personalized care that is why every student should know their own blood group.
Students also learned the procedure of determination of Hb% in blood sample, importance of haemoglobin and normal range of haemoglobin in blood. The determination of haemoglobin levels is a crucial experiment in medical and biological sciences due to its importance in diagnosing, managing and understanding various health conditions. Haemoglobin determination is a quick, reliable and vital test in both diagnostic and preventive health care.
In this workshop students also performed the blood sugar test and they learn about importance of sugar level in blood. Blood sugar testing is crucial for monitoring and managing health, especially for those as risk of or living with diabetes.
Blood pressure measurement is a crucial tool for assessing heart and circulatory system health. Monitoring blood pressure helps detect the potential health risk early, allowing for timely interventions that can prevent severe complication. From this blood pressure measurement experiment student learned about arterial blood pressure, procedure of the blood pressure measurement, handlings of sphygmomanometer and stethoscope and they acquired the knowledge of systolic, diastolic and normal range of blood pressure.
Significant outcomes of the workshop:
1. Students acquired the knowledge by hands on training on clinical laboratory experiments
2. Known the blood group identification techniques
3. Known about determination of HB% procedure and importance
4. Learned about measurement of Blood pressure procedure and importance
5. Known about determination of Blood sugar level

During inauguration of the workshop Dr.Gajanan Wagh, professor department of Zoology and department DBT project coordinator explained the aims and objectives of the workshop on clinical laboratory techniques. Dr. K.S. Keche, medical officer, Primary health centre, Anjangaon bari delivered the lecture on the medical care and pathological importance to the participant students. Ms.Dhanashri Pakhan research scholar guided the girl students of 12 th standard regarding PCOD issues and preventive measures. Shri Vinod Mugal, Head Master, Janata High School,Anjangaon bari proposed the vote of thanks.
This workshop was successfully conducted by Dr.G.D.Hande, Dr.S.V.Gawande as activity in-charge teachers under the guidance of Dr. G.V.Korpe, principal, Dr.D.D.Khedkar, DBT star project coordinator, Dr.J.D.Dhote, professor and Head Department of Zoology, Dr.Gajanan A. Wagh, DBT project coordinator of the Zoology Department.
