A One Day Workshop on “Enhancing Biological Laboratory Maintenance Skills for Non-Teaching Staff in Life Sciences Department was organized by the Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati on 24 August, 2024 from 11.00 am - 5 pm.
The Workshop aimed to provide a platform for giving Hands-on-Training in Learning Microscopes & Digitized Photography, Laboratory Glassware maintenance, Handling and maintainance of sophisticated Instruments in Laboratory, Preparing and Maintaining Laboratory Chemicals and Caring of Biological Museum specimens and preservative preparation thus providing a Scientific Attitude, Creativity & Skills to the Biological Laboratory Staff. Target Group: UG/PG Non-Teaching staff of Life Sciences Department (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences). A total 35 Participants registered for the Workshop.
The One Day Workshop began with the Inaugural Function at The AV Theatre Hall from 11.30-12.00 pm. The Inaugural Function was Presided by Dr Gajanan Korpe, Principal, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati and Inaugurated by Dr Dinesh Khedkar, Professor and Head, Department of Botany & College DBT Star Project Co-ordinator. Dr Korpe greeted all the participants for the workshop and reported the success of the college through different prestigious awards given to the college. Dr Khedkar spoke on the importance of taking such workshops for the Laboratory staff. Dr Jayashree Dhote, Professor and Head, Department of Zoology gave a welcome speech and spoke on the activities conducted by the Department of Zoology throughout the year. Dr Gajanan Wagh, Professor, Department of Zoology & Departmental DBT Project Co-ordinator gave an Introductory Speech about the activities to be conducted in the workshop during the Technical Session I and Technical Session II. Mr Maheshbhau Patil, Office Supritendant, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati spoke a few words about the importance of workshop for Non-teaching staff. The Program was conducted by Dr Sujata Kawade, Assistant Professor & Organizing Secretary of Workshop, Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College Amravati. A Practical Manual prepared by Department of Zoology titled “Biological Laboratory Preparation of Chemicals” was also inaugurated in the Inaugural function by the hands of the dignitaries on the dias. The manual was prepared by Dr Shubhangi Gawande on behalf of the Department of Zoology for the use of the participants in the workshop.
A Registration counter was arranged at the AV theatre hall where the already registered participants and the spot registrations were recorded. The registered participants were given a workshop kit containing writing pad, pen and Workshop ID.
Technical session I of the Workshop was conducted at Computer Science Laboratory of Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati where three Power Point Presentations were taken: The first Presentation was given by Mr Piyoosh Hande, Director, Mastiff Solution Pvt Ltd on the Software prepared for Store Keeping applicable to the laboratory staff. This software included the maintenance of Stock Statements of Laboratory-ware like Chemicals, Instruments, Glassware, Museum Specimens, Slides, Charts, ICT tools, etc. The Second Presentation was given by Dr Prashant Mandlik, Professor, Department of Chemistry on ‘Laboratory Chemical Preparation and Safety”. The presentation included preparing chemicals of different concentrations, maintenance of chemicals and safety measures while handling of chemicals. The Third Presentation was given by Dr Pankaj Nagpure, Professor & Head, Department of Physics on “Maintenance of Laboratory Instruments”. The presentation contained use, care and maintenance of Laboratory instruments and the precautions to be taken.
A nutritious lunch was arranged at the college auditorium for the participants of the Non-teaching staff members.
Technical Session II at the Under Graduate Zoology Laboratory began with hands-on training on various Instruments, Microscopes, Glassware, Chemical Preparation and Maintenance of Museum specimens. Dr Anuradha Rajoria demonstrated the use of Microscopes in the Laboratory. Focusing of different microscopes like Binocular Dissecting Microscope, Binocular Compound Microscope and Trinocular Compound microscope & Digital Cilika Photography Microscope were demonstrated. Here digitized use of microscopy by taking photographs and videos of the histological slides and live animals like paramecium were also demonstrated. The Demonstration on use and care of various instruments like Hot air oven, Microtome, Rotary shaker, Bacteriological Incubator, Homogenizer, Water bath, Distillation plant was given by Dr Sujata Kawade. Dr Priyanka Ramteke gave a hands-on training on Preparation and Maintenance of different Chemicals in the laboratory. She demonstrated weighing and preparation of chemicals and care to be taken during handling of chemicals. Dr Shubhangi Gawande gave a hands-on training on the Use and Maintenance of Glassware in the laboratory. Here, different types of glassware and cleaning of glass ware used in biological laboratory experimentation were demonstrated. Mr Roshan Godse gave a hands-on training and demonstration on use and maintenance of Laminar Air Flow and Electrophoresis in the laboratory. Ms Vaishnavi Kuralkar, Research Student, Department of Zoology, gave the demonstration on working of Laminar Air Flow and Autoclave. Information on the Maintenance, arrangement of various animals in the Museum (Specimens) and preparation of different preservatives used in museum was given by Dr Gayatri Hande. Here, details regarding the specific arrangement of animals from Non-Chordates to Chordates, Human skeleton, Scats of different animals, different stages of the life cycle of insects, were shown to the Non-teaching staff participants. Mr Vivek Rane and Mr Saket Wankhede, Post Graduate Teachers, demonstrated the use and maintenance of Centrifuge, Homogenizer, water bath, distillation plant.
Also, a visit of the Participants was arranged at the CIC (Central Instrumentation Centre) of Shri Shivaji Science College where sophisticated instruments like X Ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), FT-IR Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Ultraviolet and Visible Absorption Spectrophotometer (UV-VIS), Trinocular Stemi 2000 Stereo Zoom Microscope with Digital Camera, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), were demonstrated to the participants.
The Concluding ceremony was conducted in the Under Graduate Zoology Laboratory where feedback of the participants was recorded. The participants gave a satisfactory feedback regarding the information given by the department faculties during the workshop. The Workshop ended with Certificate distribution to the participants by hands of Dr Jayashree Dhote, Professor and Head, Department of Zoology and Dr Gajanan Wagh, Professor and Departmental DBT Project Co-ordinator.
