Activity Report:

Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati is making its valuable contribution in creating bright citizens by achieving the comprehensive development, heritage and cultural progress of the country. Continuing this tradition, Department of Zoology under DBT Star Project Scheme 2024 has organized a “Zoological Museum Study Program: An Introduction of Animal Classification, Taxidermy & Preserved Animals” for school students of 8th & 9th standard on 28th September 2024 (Saturday) at the Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati. This student visit aimed to raise scientific awareness among students as well as information regarding animal classification, taxidermy, and preserved specimens, which we believe will significantly inspire young minds towards understanding and appreciating our rich faunal diversity. A total of 5 schools viz. Shri Ganeshdas Rathi high School; Shri Shivaji Ideal School; Golden Kids High School; Shivaji Multipurpose high school, Govt. Girls High School were selected with 10-15 students from 8th & 9th standard accompanied with 1or 2 teachers.
The program was organized by incharge teachers- Dr. Shubhangi Gawande and Dr. Anuradha Rajoria and was exhibited in following different stations:
Station I- Information about non-chordata with examples by Dr. Shubhangi Gawande
Station II- Information about chordata with examples by Dr. Anuradha Rajoria
Station III- Osteology (Study of Bones) by Dr. Sujata Kawade
Station IV- Classification and Taxidermy by Dr. Gajanan Wagh
Station V- Visit to Museum and Taxidermy by Dr. Gayatri Hande
Station VI- Information about Local Faunal Diversity by Mr. Pratik Chaudhary
The program started sharply at 10.00am by welcoming the students with their accompanying teachers in presence of the whole teaching and non-teaching staff of zoology department, by offering them flowers after which Dr. G. A. Wagh, Department DBT Coordinator, gave an introduction of the study programme and highlighted the importance of this study programme in creating as well as spreading knowledge and awareness of the resources which we have in the department w.r.t Museum, non-chordata, chordate, taxidermy and local faunal diversity documentation to school students. A total of 81 students from 5 schools were registered in the visit. Students were divided in groups and were directed towards different stations.
Station I- Information about non-chordata: Dr. Shubhangi Gawande, handled station I and described the Invertebrates or non-chordata with examples from respective phylum (Protozoa, Porifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca & Echinodermata) with specimen and related materials.
Station II- Information about chordate: This station was explained by Dr. Anuradha Rajoria. Dr. Rajoria explained the classes within chordata with examples (Hemichordata, Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves & Mammalia) with specimen and related materials.
Station III- Osteology (Study of Bones): Dr. Sujata Kawade handled this station and explained axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton to students with the help of bones and related cards.
Station IV- Classification and Taxidermy: Dr. Gajanan Wagh explained the animal classification and the process of stuffed animal preservation by taxidermy technique with the help of PowerPoint presentation.
Station V- Visit to Museum: Dr. Gayatri Hande, detailed the students about the number of specimens present in the Zoological Museum, their preservation in formalin, 70% alcohol and stuffing. Dr. Hande used the material provided in the form of cards, barcodes etc. to brief the students.
Station VI- Information about Local Faunal Diversity: Mr. Pratik Chaudhary displayed the material prepared on the local faunal diversity including Butterfly, Dragonfly, Invertebrates, insect and birds. He explained about the habit and habitat of different types of animals including Butterfly, insects and birds.
Students enjoyed and grasped the information provided at different stations. This one day museum visit program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. J. D. Dhote, Prof. & Head, Department of Zoology and Dr. G. A. Wagh, Prof. & Departmental DBT Coordinator. Department of Zoology prepared had some materials in the form of booklets, caps, batch, Geometrical pouches and refreshment which were distributed to the students and accompanying teachers. As review, feedback form for teachers about this study programme were circulated and collected. In the presence of Dr. J. D. Dhote, Prof. & Head, Department of Zoology; Dr. G. A.
