NSD 2016 Report

National Science Day Celebrated in Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati.

In commemoration of the discovery of Raman Effect by Sir C. V. Raman the National Science Day was celebrated in Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati on 27/02/2016.

On this occasion Prof. Dr. M. K. Rai from P. G. Department of Biotechnology, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati was the chief guest while Principal Dr. V. G. Thakare chaired the inaugural function. Prof. L. N. Gawande and Dr. S. D. Patil were also present on the dies.

Professor M. K. Rai while addressing the college students gave in-depth inaugural speech explaining the importance of nanotechnology in human life. The material responsible for wall lizard to stick on smooth surfaces of walls is a nanomaterial and such nanomaterial is now used to produce “Gecko Tape” which is much more powerful than ordinary “Tixo Tape” in adhesive property.

Nowadayes zinc oxide nanomaterials are widely used in sunscreen lotion moisturizers, antiaging and other products to take care of our health as life is precious. The Bhasmas like swarna ( Gold) bhasma, rajat (Silver) bhasma, tamra (Copper) bhasma used in Ayurveda also contain nanomaterials. Similarly, homeopathy, the true green medicine also contain nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles have been studied in detail and shown to possess inhibitory effects on disease producing bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoan’s and arthropods. Such silver particles are the new generation antimicrobials as the pathogens are becoming resistant to different antibiotic drugs.

Professor Rai also discussed the issues of feeding the global population which already surpassed 07 billion in 2011 and it is expected to increase to 9.1 billion by 2050. In this situation nanotechnology is the hope for solving the problems through nano food and nano based products like nano-pesticides, nano- fertilizers and nano- fungicides. Dr. S. D. Patil, Head of the department of Microbiology and the convener of the NSD celebrations delivered an introductory speech and explained the objectives of celebrating National Science Day. NSD is celebrated every year to spread a message about importance of scientific applications in daily life, to display scientific activities for human welfare, to implement new technology for development of the science, to give an opportunity to scientific minded citizens and to popularize the science and technology.
