Department of Environmental Science

Brief History

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological, chemical and information sciences, geology along with other sciences to the study of the environment, and finds the solution of environmental problems. Department of Environmental Science established in 1999. In 2007 the department came on 100% grant. The subject of Environmental Science is being offered at UG level in two combinations.

The PG programme has been introduced in 2012 -13.

Research laboratory has been recognized by SGBAU for Ph. D. in 2012.

Department plays a huge role in saving environment to people in diverse communities. Saving environment is a practice of looking after the natural environment on individual, organizational or societal levels for the gains of both the environment and humans. Environmental education is very important since we live in an epoch where more and more people are disconnected from nature and unaware of critical environmental issues. Education is a tool for self-empowerment because it enables us to take serious and effective action. Environmental education leads people to be future conservation leaders and encourage them to take serious and effective action towards critical environmental issues of the day. It encourages students to research, investigate how and why things happen, and make their own decisions about complex environmental issues. By developing and enhancing critical and creative thinking skills, in students which will definitely help to build up green nation.

The department conducts various Extension / ISR/Outreach / Best practice on regular basis. The department is unique in having expertise in number of fields of Environmental Science like ecology, Biodiversity and energy resource management, Microbiology, environmental chemistry, Water and Wastewater treatment technology, Air and Air Pollution Control Technology, Environmental biotechnology, Industrial safety, EIA, Environmental priorities and Sustainable Development, Hazardous Waste management, Remote sensing etc. The department is also extending consultancy services in the areas of air, water, soil, noise EIA and microbial analysis to various corners of society.
